Sibley Day

The motto of Sibley Day is” Take a day off from classes, but not from learning.” I attend to two of the seminars that they have on Sibley Day. The first one that I went was “Dynamic Professional cover letters and Resumes to open doors for interviews.” I really like this class because Professor Wehrli teach me a new knowledge on how to make good resumes and cover letters, also what things that you can or can’t do in preparing those things. She knows exactly what did her talking about and her presentation is really effective and right to the point. She mentioned to always proof read your cover letters and resumes before you send them to the company that you’re going to apply. She also showed us different styles of resumes that company would like to see.

The second one that I attended was “Preparing for a successful interview.” First, I thought this class is for every major in Lindenwood, but I found out that this class is only for education major. I sat in the front row because I really excited about this class before so I can’t just leave in the middle of the class. Even though it doesn’t relate with my major at all, but I learned a lot about education major and how to prepare for successful interview to be a teacher. There are two principals that teach us in that class, one from high school and one from elementary school. They shared their experienced back when they applied to be a teacher, and how do you work yourself up to be a good teacher.

Sibley Day is a good thing that Lindenwood University should have it every semester because you can take a day off from classes but still learning new things that related to your major or interest.

Citizen Journalism

Citizen Journalism is that people without professional journalism training but they can use new technology and their intelligent to find the truth about the news or new events. By taking survey of professional media, we are actually part of citizen journalism, because the assignments that we have in this class make us to fact-check the media and find out about the latest news or events. Not only we have to keep up-to-date with the news but also we have to share our opinion and idea into it in blogs. Sometimes, I open two or three websites that tells the same events or stories about something because I just want to get the truth about that news.

In my opinion, citizen Journalism is important thing for us, especially our generation. Generation Y always depend on new technology and with that ability we can get the news faster than previous generation. Moreover, we want to share our opinion and idea to the public about the current events or news.

However, there is some controversy concerning the term of Citizen Journalism, because many professional journalists believe that they can’t do their job correctly without any training program and learning code of ethics to become a journalist. They also worried about losing their job because most audience prefers to read citizen journalism’s stories rather than their stories. I agree with the professional journalists because people without knowledge in journalism doesn’t know about what things that you can or can’t publish in the media and also they doesn’t about the communication law that could bring big trouble for them if they disobey it. There were many citizen journalism that have to go to Supreme Court because the other party sued them for what they were said or published.

When it comes to citizen journalism history, Dan Gilmor could be considered the pioneer of this term because he wrote the first blog at a newspaper website, while he was a columnist in San Jose news. The blog is believed as the traditional media by many journalists. He also wrote a book called “We the Media.” That talked about the history of journalism. He shared a lot about his opinion and his success in journalism industry in this book.

Citizen journalism also can get their message faster than any other media sources. For example, when the bomb explodes at Bali, Indonesia in 2005, a local tourist caught the events with his video camera that he always brings it with him. The news and video about the bomb in Bali spread faster to us than the media. This is only one example that citizen journalism is really important to us and I believe there are a lot more events that citizen journalism caught in the scene before the media did. However, with the new technology that keeps growing nowadays, it will makes citizen journalism can work better and faster in order to get that message out to the audience.

Marshall who?

Marshall Mcluhan was a professor from Canada, he is considered by a lot of people to be the first father and leading prophet of the electronic age. Honestly, I didn’t know about him at all before I got this key blog assignment. However, after I read an article about him, I found out he wrote more than 12 books and hundreds of article about the media and their effects in our live, also once referred to as the “Oracle of the electronic age."

Understanding Media
One of his famous book is “Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man,” in 1964. In this book, he talks about the effects of technology that could change human behavior and their relationship with others. One thing that comes to my mind is how technology nowadays can make you really lazy and we as generation Y can’t live without it. Because not only everything nowadays is instant that didn’t require us to do hard work to accomplish something but also technology is a must in our daily live.

Global Village

Marshall Mcluhan also came up with term” Global Village”, which literally means if something happens in different country, the whole world will know about it. The media is connecting the whole world with one event that happens in one country. For example, few years ago when Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans, my parents in Indonesia were the first one that telling me about it because I’m not aware about the news at that time.

The medium is the message

Back in the day, there is only one media that people get their news from, newspaper. Mcluhan preferred the print media rather than the high technology media because with print media, people can relax and absorb the news anytime they want, also give people more time in thinking about the news. In the other hand, everything that you need nowadays is on your palm of your hand; with all the smart phones we can get the news anytime and anywhere, which is not bad at all if we combined those with reading other form of media that can help you get the right message and responding the right way.

check out this video

Mcluhan died in 1980 and that’s when is the beginning of the television generations that fulfill some of his prediction. There are a lot of his opinions that become one of the hottest topics to talk about after he died because it got many people’s attention about how he thinks about the media. Most of the opinions that Marshall Mcluhan had are really important for all of us in order to become more media literate and don’t dependent on one media because there are a lot more news out there that can help you know and understand the message in the news. Don’t let the media control you and tell you what to do but you have to take control of the media and do what is right.

The Real Winner of the Super Bowl? Dennys.com

The Real Winner of the Super Bowl? Dennys.com
This article is about the results traffic of viewer that responds to the super bowl ads in 2009. The winner of this year’s is Denny’s; which used its ads to offer free breakfast to everyone. There are 1,541 Denny’s restaurants all around the United States and they have served over 1,300 customers per location the day of promotion; more than five times the regular value. I think, Denny’s commercial is really simple compared to the other ads but they did a really good job at hitting the hotspot of most people that watched super bowl. Who doesn’t like a “free meal”, or in this case free breakfast.

This article caught my attention because I always keep up-to-date with commercials on television. As advertising major, I want to make commercials on television after I graduate and that’s why I have to learn from current media professional in making good and effective commercials.

Why we should care?

As the future media professional, we should aware about this event because it gives us a good point in advertising businesses about what Denny’s did in their advertising. Denny’s not only knows the hotspot that people like nowadays but also the most important thing is the catch of that ad. Denny’s paid 3 million dollar for their 30 second ad on the super bowl and hoping people that come to get free breakfast can spend their money on beverages for this break-even opportunity. This article is not only good for the future media professional but also for the current media professional because they need to improve their strategy in order to get better responses from their customer.

Finally, Generation Y is always ahead from others about the latest event, and I believe there are some groups of Generation Y that waited in line in front of Denny’s restaurant to get free breakfast. According to Denny's CEO Nelson Marchioli, “the most important from this event is that customers are reminded that the restaurant is a place for good food and value – and that they will come back and spend some money.”

The Freedom of the Press

Freedom of the press is American’s right to share and show their opinion to the public. This right is protected by the first amendment:

“Congress shall make no law, respecting on establishment of religion; or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech; or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble; and to petition the government for a redress grievances.”

Even though is protected by the constitution, many people, especially journalists still argue and complain that is not free enough. United States still censored in some way before the media publishes to the audience. I’m glad that United States still censored the media, because I would prefer not to see inappropriate and listen to profanity in the media. Even though, sometimes I still catch some of those things in television.

As an international student here in Lindenwood University, I want to share to you information about the freedom of the press in Indonesia. In my country, there is no freedom of the press; everything has to pass the government before it publishes to the public. There is a big difference when I came here and try to adapt with American cultures. Because in America you can share your opinion and idea with everyone without worry about if somebody going to snitch on you. In my opinion, it will be a lot better if we have freedom of the press and the constitution that protect that Right because it will help the Indonesian government because we can share our opinion and idea to solve the problems that we face.

Freedom of the press often used towards negative things. For example, Gitlow v. New York. This was a case where a socialist, Benjamin Gutlow tell all the union members to overthrown the government in New York. Of course, he lost the case and the Supreme Court threw him to jail. In this case he was used the freedom of the press in a negative way that could attack the government of the United States.

In conclusion, I think people need freedom of the press to express and share their opinions with everyone. But they have to keep their ideas and opinion in positive way and responsible with what their activities. I really hope that other countries including Indonesia can also have freedom of the press in the future because without freedom of the press it is really hard to know what is going on and to find out the truth about anything.

Indonesian Media

As you already know I’m from Indonesia. I want to share to you information about our media and the differences that we have compared to the media in America.

The significant difference between our media and America’s media is there is no freedom of the press. In Indonesia, journalists, producers, and all of the people working with the media have to pass the government’s filter before they can publish the news. In America everyone has a right to say anything to public because the first amendment that allows them to. It really surprised me the first time I saw “Saturday Night Live” make the presidential election into a comedy, making fun of each candidate. In the other hand, everyone has to watch what they are talking in the media in Indonesia because the government always keeps an eye on them.

First, I want to talk about the radio. Most radio stations in Indonesia are more concerned about their interactions with the listeners. They have different stations for different generations which mostly talk about their lifestyles, current events, and sports. Every time I went back home, I always listened to two of my favorite radio stations because they keep me up-to-date with current events, news, and music. Also, I can listen to the people participating and share their story on the radio.

Next, when it comes to news in television, they not only show the national news but also international news. In my opinion, they are doing a decent job in blending the international news, because we can always find out what happened in a different country. On the other hand, I have barely seen in America’s TV news talking about the international news. The only time I see it is if the news has a connection with the United States. Moreover, you never see people swearing and doing inappropriate things on television because everything has to pass the government’s filter.

Now, we are going to talk about my favorite part of the media, movies. We always play not only Indonesian movies but also American movies in the theater. All of the American movies that we play in the theater come with subtitles in Indonesian, so everyone can understand. Almost all Indonesian movies are about love, friendship, school, and horror. In my opinion, they can make a really good movie when it comes to horror.

Here is a preview of one of the horror movies that we have.

Finally, when it comes to music, we have different genres that are basically the same as American music. Our local bands often copy the styles and type of music from the international bands that they admired. However, there are few traditional genres that we have. For example: dangdut, keroncong, etc. People that like those types of music are more likely older people because they are very traditional and old.

Baby Boomers v. Generation Y

The first things that comes to people’s mind when they hear about “Generation Y” is Narcissistic, want a better pay, flexible work schedule, and expects an easy job.

All these characteristics about my generation might be true for some millennial, but they’re not for me. Growing up my parents taught me that to be a winner you have to pay the price and work harder than anybody else. That’s exactly what I do in school, college, and at work. Moreover, as an international student in the United States, I have to work twice as hard as anybody else to be a winner in school and work.

The baby boomers often focus on the negative parts of Generation Y and never talk about the positive parts of our generation that the baby boomers can’t keep up with, for example, our generation is always up-to-date with new technology and internet. Almost all of our generation are familiar with and can operate an I-phone, you can accomplish many things in that new “smart” phone. Most of the baby boomers either can’t operate an I-phone or don’t know there is a “smart” phone like that. I don’t have an I-Phone but if i were to change my phone, i would definitely choose an I-Phone. You can ask me how to operate an I-Phone and it’s going to take me a few minutes to learn and to show you everything that you can do with that phone.

When it comes to the dress code at work, I completely agree that we should feel comfortable with the outfit that we wear at work. We can wear button down shirts and khaki pants and still look professional and casual at the same time. The bottom line is that there is nothing to do with the outfit that we wear at work as long as we can perform our best at work. I really like how the Zappos Company has fun activities at their office that can make our generation enjoy and motivated to do our job. I really appreciate that some of the baby boomers can change their thinking and accept what our generation wants to do in the working environment.

During the last Christmas break, I worked at TBG, Incorporated for my internship. We did a lot of fun activities in the morning in order to get all the employees ready and motivated to do their job for the rest of the day. Almost all of my coworkers are Generation Y and our manager understands how our generation wants to be treated at work. TBG, Incorporated is one of the fastest growing sales and marketing firms in the Midwest.

The baby boomers should adapt and change their thinking to our generation, because if we feel comfortable with what we do, we can do better than their generation. I think they need to consider this phrase, “You have to take one step back before taking two steps forward.”
