Viral Marketing is simply known as “word of mouth” advertising. Viral marketing is very effective way to introduce your new products or services generating traffic and flow business. However, they need strategic planning in order to get people’s attention and interest. Viral marketing used to happen by “word of mouth” by nowadays its spread out all around the internet. There are a lot of social media tools that you can use for viral marketing, such as: YouTube, Facebook, Hotmail, twitter, blog, etc.

Marketers used social media as their way to start their viral marketing campaign; it’s not only it’s a lot faster to reach the audience but also it can reach huge number of people on the global internet connection. Most businesses usually offer free product or service to the public that can satisfies their needs and solve their problems. The audience will come visit our website to get the product or service and we have to handle the increasing traffic in our website including our product availability.

Social Media and viral marketing are the keys to building awareness into your online marketing campaign. One of my favorite social media that I used is twitter. With twitter, we can learn what people talking about, what interest them, and also we can give people in the market about our personality and updates. The other social media that I like is LinkedIn. With Linkedin you can connect with other people by search their connection or companies that related to them; so not only you can know a lot of people but also you can market your product or service to them.

According to Tim Ferris, the author of “The Four Hour Workweek,” he says that we have to make something remarkable that get people’s attention and interest. It only took short period of time to make his book #1 New York Time and Wall Street Journal bestseller. In my opinion, viral marketing is a great way to introduce your product or service in the market and get response from them about our product or service. I will definitely used for viral marketing campaign to introduce my clothing line business to the market. As a college student not only I need to manage my expense but also need to use it wisely especially if I want to expand my business.

Rift Fournier

Our guest speaker for last class is Rift Fournier, a professor here at Lindenwood University. I remembered met him on campus before and he gave a compliment on how I dressed when I dressed up for my job interview in downtown St. Louis. Rift have been traveled and worked in New York, Los Angeles, Berlin, Hamburg, Barcelona, and Paris. He enjoys writing television programs and movies and met several famous people that worked together with him. He also did several movies back in the day.

He started off by telling us that we will change our mind in what major that we are in, and this is so true for me because I started as a graphic design major because I have a passion in drawing and designing products or events. My sophomore year I changed my major to advertising and media because not only I still can do drawing and
Designing but also I know how to introduce my products to the public market.

However, he loved his job and he passionate about what he do. He graduated with Psychology degree and he also improved his writing skill in law school. He encourages us to find a job that we have a passion for. I totally agree with him because if we doing something that we really like about, we will give our best performance in that job. I will graduate next year and I definitely will find a job that I have passion for. I also learned from my job experience in the past that I don’t really like, I didn’t do well in that job and it’s a struggle to go to work every day.

I really enjoyed his presence in class and learn a lot from his experience and story. He is a really fun, easy going guy, and I also like his way of presenting the message to the student. I will definitely look forward to have him as a professor next semester.

Social Media

Social Media is a way to share our opinion or ideas to everybody that have specific common interest. Social Media nowadays has become a lot easier because there are free tools that you can use to share your interest with somebody else, for example: blogs, podcast, videos, wikis, etc.

However, one of my favorite social media is Facebook. I’m sure everybody familiar with facebook and almost everybody that I know have their facebook’s account. Even my Dad just made his Facebook’s account because all his coworkers already have one and tell him to start using facebook. With Facebook I can talk with my friends that I haven’t see for years and also to stay keep in touch with friends from different cities or countries. The other social media that have similar concepts is Myspace. Not like facebook, there are a lot of things that you can do to make your Myspace account looks different than anybody else. A lot of people use myspace as their media to promote their businesses, for example: music, clothing line, accessories, etc.

Blog is one of social media that could help you share your opinion, ideas, and products with others. I didn’t anything about Blog before but in this class I learned a lot more about blog and how it can help your career in advertising industries. There are more than 9 million blogs out there with new ones popping up every day. With blog you can post your favorite article, picture, video and talk about the things that you really interested with, also Blog is a really good tool to presents your portfolio online so that Employer can see your experience and capability before they hire you as their employee.

Youtube is become phenomenon in social media because how easy to work this tool and it’s free. All you have to do is upload your favorite video online from your computer and everybody all around the world can see that video. There are a lot of people get really famous because their videos on youtube. With youtube, I can watch my favorite TV show back home because somebody upload recorded video of that show on tape.

Twitter is another free social media that allows you to post your status and share it with others. I’m not a big fan of twitter because I think I don’t need to know or care what other people doing and vice versa. However, I just make my twitter account couple weeks ago to learn on how this media works. From what I learned, people have to follow other people’s account to see their status updated and some people that you follow will eventually follow you to see your updates.

All these free tools make Social Media a lot easier and faster. as part of generation Y, it helps me a lot to shared my ideas with people that have same interest with me, and also we like to get connected with our friends all the time.

Generation Diva

The article “Are We Turning Our Tweens into ‘Generation Diva’?” written by Jessica Bennett is talking about obsession that some people have to meet the ideal beauty on young girls. In the "Toddlers & Tiaras,” the TLC reality series, those toddlers have to Use beauty products to compete in beauty pageants. And also it talks about other shows on television that builds the ideal beauty for women.

I have seen the commercial for “Toddlers & Tiaras” show and I think it’s ridiculous because their mother support them to use beauty products to get the beauty standards, even though almost all of those toddlers were just starting to grow up and learn how to read. As a mother, they have to be good example for her kids because most young kids look at her parents as their role models. Instead of focusing on how to meet the ideal beauty for pageants they should be focusing on living a healthy life.

However, it will change many toddlers’ mind about their ideal beauty standard and forced them to win the beauty pageants can make them feels insecure and unhappy about their body. Using beauty products in an early age can also lead to spending more money on beauty treatment in the feature. That’s why some people spend more than $300,000 on just their face and hair, so you can imagine how much money that those people spend on their whole body.

They never feel satisfied with what they have and want to get more and more. That’s why a lot of celebrities had plastic surgery, liposuction, etc to make them feel better about themselves and to set up a new beauty standard on the media.

Podcasting

I heard about Podcasting in Fundamentals of Internet that I take this semester. With podcasting you can listens to radio stations, transfer video in anytime and anywhere. The equipment that you need for podcasting is computer, internet connection, and an Ipod or other Mp3 player.

Podcasting become really popular among our generation and also some of the baby boomers generation is because it’s really simple and easy. There are a lot of website that will provide you with the video that you want to see or radio station that you want to listen to, for example I tunes is one of the famous podcatcher that can help you to get everything that you want to listen or see. After you download a podcast in your computer, you can send those videos or other things to your Ipod or other Mp3 player, and different other form. With smart phones that can go into the internet, you can get podcast tool in your cell phones.

However, Podcast is not only entertainment but you can also to share your ideas with others, for instance if you want to share your marketing strategy with your coworkers or your boss, you can make a podcast and send it to them. Podcasting will make your job easier and you can work on your project in anytime and anywhere.

If you are subscribed to any podcast in your computer, it will send you videos that you might like it because they keep track on what are you watching or listening usually. Podcasting is a really good application that I like to have on my Ipod because I travel a lot and sometimes I spent a long time in airplanes or cars, so with podcast I still can enjoy my favorite show or even share my ideas with friends and coworkers.

The other reason why our generation loves about this application is because it’s free. With podcasting you will never missed your favorite shows anymore because you can download that video anytime you want to watch it.

Generation Y or the Millennials are generation that was born after 1977 and there are over 70 million people that considered in this generation, including myself. We believe that we can do anything that we want, and we want to do everything fast and easy.

Those are generation that Companies or businesses need to market their product or service to because they bring a lot of money to the market. You have already heard that Generation Y don’t like to read nor watching TV, because they spends most of their time on the internet and stay connected with their friends. Moreover, a lot of companies change their marketing strategy to follow Generation Y needs and wants because Generation Y spends more than 200 billion dollars annually and will soon replace the older generation, which is the baby boomer generation.

I think Apple, Nike, and Blackberry are few examples of companies that did well in marketing their product to the millennials. Even though the products that they are trying to sell weren’t cheap but they make them look cool and proud in their community by having it. Apple and Nike made their products as a lifestyle for most people, so they make the customers think that they can’t live without it. Blackberry is getting their way up by introducing free text messaging service to all blackberry’s users. They hit the hotspot that generation Y concerned about, which is Free or cheap and text messaging is a big deal for our generation.

This is one of the product that most of our generation excited about. Pacemaker is the first Pocket size dj system in the world.

The most important thing that each Company should have on their product is “Authenticity.” I know it might sounds cliché, but being authentic is a big deal for our generation. For example, Facebook and Myspace are the most well known social networking sites for our generation. But if you want to make other social networking sites, it might not be successful because most people don’t want to join to your websites. That is one of marketing strategy that I applied to my clothing line business, that I only printed limited quantity of my designs, because people like have something that others don’t have.

I know it’s not easy as a marketer or the owner of a company to market their product to generation Y, but instead of focusing on our marketing strategy we have to take a step back and do more research about our generation. For example, get to know them better by spending time with them and listens to what they want or need. With that information, you can market your products or service to generation Y a lot easier and faster.

Am I a Pirate?

First of all, I stopped buying CD since I’m in middle school because I can get all the music I want by downloading on the internet. I remember the first program that I used is Kazaa and I changed to Bearshare in high school because in Kazaa you have to specific amount per moth to get unlimited download. I downloaded everything, from songs to music video, and also movies. But most of the time, I got a lot of different viruses in my computer that came from the file that I downloaded. So that’s why you have to make sure that you have antivirus system in your computer before you download music or movies from the internet.

How the artist will make money for a living?

The first thing that comes to most people’s mind is this question. At the beginning of this movement of pirating music, artists did try so hard to stop that with sued the owners of these websites but it’s impossible to stop that if most people in the world do that. Even though it hurts the income of most artists that trying to make money, on the Brightside they get their songs popular faster in the public and most of the time people already know their songs before the new album come out. Moreover, with Myspace and Facebook, new artists put up their songs in their page so people will recognize and listens to their music. They used technology networking to get their name and song’s recognition from the audience.

How About Pirating Movies?

Most people that I know in the United States don’t download movies from the internet because it takes a long time and most of the times you didn’t get good quality movies. In the other hand, in Indonesia, there are a lot of people that sells all kinds of movies in DVDs that they downloaded from internet. Usually, it’s really cheap and it’s a good quality movie like an original DVD. Most people back home choose to buy those DVDs instead of paying more to watch in the theater. However, here in United States, I always go to Hulu to watch my favorite TV Shows.

Generation Y

Our Generation always wants everything fast, easy, and free. In my opinion, it’s not stealing anybody’s music or money because everything is offer to us to enjoy it. I know that they work hard for the music that they made but they use this thing as an opportunity to reach more fans.

Finally, it might be wrong or illegal but I’m not going to spend any money on music if I can get it for free on the internet.

Photo-retouching

Technology is growing so fast nowadays, everything become so fast and easy with technology. One of the technologies that some photographers used is Photo-retouching. Photo-retouching is often used for entertainment purposes, for instance magazines and red carpet photo shoot.

It allows them to either make the picture look better or worse. I remember that I watched “Killing Us Softly” video last semester in media literacy class. In that video, Jean Kilbourne showed that in Esquire magazine, they used different parts of several women’s body to establish an ideal woman in that magazine. So it’s impossible for everybody to get that perfect look in the magazine.

Some people do photo-retouching for selling whatever product that they trying to sell, for example Proactiv acne cleanser. They often used celebrity that have pimples before using Proactiv and after using that product they looked flawless, but their picture probably has been retouched. Photo-retouching could bring either good or bad effects, depends on how audience receive that message.

It could be bad for teenagers that start looking for role models in their lives, because they usually look on celebrity that have perfect body weight, tall, and good looking faces. But the celebrities were not like that in a real life, one of the reasons they look perfect on magazines or internet is because photo-retouching. Some teenagers trying so hard to be like them, but most of the time they ended up with anorexic and bulimic.
check out this video

It also reminds me to story that me and my brother have two years ago. We try to look for cars on craigslist.com, and we found one car that we like. In that picture the car looks like brand new, so we went up there with my friends to see it but as soon as I got out from the car, I’m surprised because I looked to totally different car from the picture on that website, so we ended up not buying that car.

In the other hand, Photo-retouching is good for people that want to save their memorable picture from back in the day with family, friends, etc. most of the old pictures that we have were often losing their color or got wrinkled, but Photo-retouching professional can make those picture like brand new again. Moreover, I used to be graphic design major and I used photo-retouching software to make my art project. You can do a lot of things to make your pictures becomes an art masterpiece.

It all depends on how you used that new technology itself. Some people will try to do anything to get success and sometimes they choose the quick ways that often get them in trouble. But if you put your hard work in it, you will get success in all aspects.

TV Everywhere -- As Long As You Pay for It

This article is about Time Warner CEO,Jeff Bewkes idea to put more TV on internet, and make consumers pay for the service. We know that Time Warner is the largest owner of cable networks here in United States, so they need to keep up with costumer’s need nowadays. Bewkes’s plan is to put all cable programming on the web like Hulu, Myspace, Yahoo TV, and Youtube. His catch is you will have to prove you have to pay cable service, satellite, or telco to get it. According to Leichtman Research Group, “that online video usage continues to grow in the past year.” People spent most of their time in front of computer rather than on television. These issues that make Jeff Bewkes change his plan in presenting cable programming in different form.

This article caught my attention because I spent most of my time in front of computer and I always watched my favorite TV shows on Hulu. The idea that we have to subscribe to cable services to get it is really good because they don’t want to lose their customers.

This past Christmas break, I worked in TBG, incorporated and their client is AT&T. AT&T now provides cable, internet, and home phone service called U-Verse. One of my managers told us that there are two businesses that would not get affected with economy crisis, which are alcohol and cable services. I know its sounds terrible but sadly it’s true here in United States. People spent their money on alcohol because they get frustrated and stayed at home watching TV. Our generation is all about new technology and we want to watch our favorite TV shows on anytime and anywhere. Especially With smart phones that we have nowadays we will not depend on television anymore.

However, there are a lot of people that didn’t have time to watch TV because their job that required them to work all day long, so they have to watch TV is on their cell phone or computer. Time Warner made good decisions to work together with Hulu because Hulu has built four largest video services in the web for the past year and they also increased TV rating by 10% this past year.

Finally, good marketing strategy is the key to keep your business on top through economy crisis. Not only cable services that have to change their form from TV to internet but also other media like newspaper have to change their form to survive nowadays. For instance, USA Today has new application that you can download on your I Phone, so you can get news anytime and anywhere.

Sunday, March 1, 2009

Bob Wigginton is one of the Professors here in Lindenwood University. He has been a journalist for more than 25 years. He shared his experience in the field and what journalism has gone through nowadays. He also shared his experience to be a journalist in Afghanistan for thirty days.

At first, I don’t really care about the journalism because it will not going to affect me in any way. But after Bob pointed out that the news that we watch on television or internet most of the time they get it from newspaper, I realize that we are going to get big problem. Internet and television are my two sources that I get the news from because I don’t like to read newspaper. Bob told us that over six thousand journalists have lost their job in newspaper industry for the past two years. We need these journalists to keep us informed with the latest news and what is going on in our communities, our country, and around the world.

There are a lot of people including us becomes a citizen journalism. We blog our opinion and ideas on the internet and share with others, but we can’t rely on them because their news isn’t always accurate and true. Even though sometimes we get the news faster than the media but we have to double check the truth from real journalists that investigate and learn that news deeper than citizen journalism. According to “The Vanishing Newspaper” book by Philip Meyer, journalism professor at the University of North Carolina,” The reason why United States newspaper vanishing because American losing faith in their ability to judge national discourse and honest recorders and national life.”

Our generations always depend on technology and most likely get the news from internet or television instead from newspaper. So that is why newspaper has to change their form of media to new technology that easy to use and we can get it at anytime and anywhere. I personally will look forward to what kind of form that newspaper will change to in the future.

Sibley Day

The motto of Sibley Day is” Take a day off from classes, but not from learning.” I attend to two of the seminars that they have on Sibley Day. The first one that I went was “Dynamic Professional cover letters and Resumes to open doors for interviews.” I really like this class because Professor Wehrli teach me a new knowledge on how to make good resumes and cover letters, also what things that you can or can’t do in preparing those things. She knows exactly what did her talking about and her presentation is really effective and right to the point. She mentioned to always proof read your cover letters and resumes before you send them to the company that you’re going to apply. She also showed us different styles of resumes that company would like to see.

The second one that I attended was “Preparing for a successful interview.” First, I thought this class is for every major in Lindenwood, but I found out that this class is only for education major. I sat in the front row because I really excited about this class before so I can’t just leave in the middle of the class. Even though it doesn’t relate with my major at all, but I learned a lot about education major and how to prepare for successful interview to be a teacher. There are two principals that teach us in that class, one from high school and one from elementary school. They shared their experienced back when they applied to be a teacher, and how do you work yourself up to be a good teacher.

Sibley Day is a good thing that Lindenwood University should have it every semester because you can take a day off from classes but still learning new things that related to your major or interest.

Citizen Journalism

Citizen Journalism is that people without professional journalism training but they can use new technology and their intelligent to find the truth about the news or new events. By taking survey of professional media, we are actually part of citizen journalism, because the assignments that we have in this class make us to fact-check the media and find out about the latest news or events. Not only we have to keep up-to-date with the news but also we have to share our opinion and idea into it in blogs. Sometimes, I open two or three websites that tells the same events or stories about something because I just want to get the truth about that news.

In my opinion, citizen Journalism is important thing for us, especially our generation. Generation Y always depend on new technology and with that ability we can get the news faster than previous generation. Moreover, we want to share our opinion and idea to the public about the current events or news.

However, there is some controversy concerning the term of Citizen Journalism, because many professional journalists believe that they can’t do their job correctly without any training program and learning code of ethics to become a journalist. They also worried about losing their job because most audience prefers to read citizen journalism’s stories rather than their stories. I agree with the professional journalists because people without knowledge in journalism doesn’t know about what things that you can or can’t publish in the media and also they doesn’t about the communication law that could bring big trouble for them if they disobey it. There were many citizen journalism that have to go to Supreme Court because the other party sued them for what they were said or published.

When it comes to citizen journalism history, Dan Gilmor could be considered the pioneer of this term because he wrote the first blog at a newspaper website, while he was a columnist in San Jose news. The blog is believed as the traditional media by many journalists. He also wrote a book called “We the Media.” That talked about the history of journalism. He shared a lot about his opinion and his success in journalism industry in this book.

Citizen journalism also can get their message faster than any other media sources. For example, when the bomb explodes at Bali, Indonesia in 2005, a local tourist caught the events with his video camera that he always brings it with him. The news and video about the bomb in Bali spread faster to us than the media. This is only one example that citizen journalism is really important to us and I believe there are a lot more events that citizen journalism caught in the scene before the media did. However, with the new technology that keeps growing nowadays, it will makes citizen journalism can work better and faster in order to get that message out to the audience.

Marshall who?

Marshall Mcluhan was a professor from Canada, he is considered by a lot of people to be the first father and leading prophet of the electronic age. Honestly, I didn’t know about him at all before I got this key blog assignment. However, after I read an article about him, I found out he wrote more than 12 books and hundreds of article about the media and their effects in our live, also once referred to as the “Oracle of the electronic age."

Understanding Media
One of his famous book is “Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man,” in 1964. In this book, he talks about the effects of technology that could change human behavior and their relationship with others. One thing that comes to my mind is how technology nowadays can make you really lazy and we as generation Y can’t live without it. Because not only everything nowadays is instant that didn’t require us to do hard work to accomplish something but also technology is a must in our daily live.

Global Village

Marshall Mcluhan also came up with term” Global Village”, which literally means if something happens in different country, the whole world will know about it. The media is connecting the whole world with one event that happens in one country. For example, few years ago when Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans, my parents in Indonesia were the first one that telling me about it because I’m not aware about the news at that time.

The medium is the message

Back in the day, there is only one media that people get their news from, newspaper. Mcluhan preferred the print media rather than the high technology media because with print media, people can relax and absorb the news anytime they want, also give people more time in thinking about the news. In the other hand, everything that you need nowadays is on your palm of your hand; with all the smart phones we can get the news anytime and anywhere, which is not bad at all if we combined those with reading other form of media that can help you get the right message and responding the right way.

check out this video

Mcluhan died in 1980 and that’s when is the beginning of the television generations that fulfill some of his prediction. There are a lot of his opinions that become one of the hottest topics to talk about after he died because it got many people’s attention about how he thinks about the media. Most of the opinions that Marshall Mcluhan had are really important for all of us in order to become more media literate and don’t dependent on one media because there are a lot more news out there that can help you know and understand the message in the news. Don’t let the media control you and tell you what to do but you have to take control of the media and do what is right.

The Real Winner of the Super Bowl? Dennys.com

The Real Winner of the Super Bowl? Dennys.com
This article is about the results traffic of viewer that responds to the super bowl ads in 2009. The winner of this year’s is Denny’s; which used its ads to offer free breakfast to everyone. There are 1,541 Denny’s restaurants all around the United States and they have served over 1,300 customers per location the day of promotion; more than five times the regular value. I think, Denny’s commercial is really simple compared to the other ads but they did a really good job at hitting the hotspot of most people that watched super bowl. Who doesn’t like a “free meal”, or in this case free breakfast.

This article caught my attention because I always keep up-to-date with commercials on television. As advertising major, I want to make commercials on television after I graduate and that’s why I have to learn from current media professional in making good and effective commercials.

Why we should care?

As the future media professional, we should aware about this event because it gives us a good point in advertising businesses about what Denny’s did in their advertising. Denny’s not only knows the hotspot that people like nowadays but also the most important thing is the catch of that ad. Denny’s paid 3 million dollar for their 30 second ad on the super bowl and hoping people that come to get free breakfast can spend their money on beverages for this break-even opportunity. This article is not only good for the future media professional but also for the current media professional because they need to improve their strategy in order to get better responses from their customer.

Finally, Generation Y is always ahead from others about the latest event, and I believe there are some groups of Generation Y that waited in line in front of Denny’s restaurant to get free breakfast. According to Denny's CEO Nelson Marchioli, “the most important from this event is that customers are reminded that the restaurant is a place for good food and value – and that they will come back and spend some money.”

The Freedom of the Press

Freedom of the press is American’s right to share and show their opinion to the public. This right is protected by the first amendment:

“Congress shall make no law, respecting on establishment of religion; or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech; or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble; and to petition the government for a redress grievances.”

Even though is protected by the constitution, many people, especially journalists still argue and complain that is not free enough. United States still censored in some way before the media publishes to the audience. I’m glad that United States still censored the media, because I would prefer not to see inappropriate and listen to profanity in the media. Even though, sometimes I still catch some of those things in television.

As an international student here in Lindenwood University, I want to share to you information about the freedom of the press in Indonesia. In my country, there is no freedom of the press; everything has to pass the government before it publishes to the public. There is a big difference when I came here and try to adapt with American cultures. Because in America you can share your opinion and idea with everyone without worry about if somebody going to snitch on you. In my opinion, it will be a lot better if we have freedom of the press and the constitution that protect that Right because it will help the Indonesian government because we can share our opinion and idea to solve the problems that we face.

Freedom of the press often used towards negative things. For example, Gitlow v. New York. This was a case where a socialist, Benjamin Gutlow tell all the union members to overthrown the government in New York. Of course, he lost the case and the Supreme Court threw him to jail. In this case he was used the freedom of the press in a negative way that could attack the government of the United States.

In conclusion, I think people need freedom of the press to express and share their opinions with everyone. But they have to keep their ideas and opinion in positive way and responsible with what their activities. I really hope that other countries including Indonesia can also have freedom of the press in the future because without freedom of the press it is really hard to know what is going on and to find out the truth about anything.

Indonesian Media

As you already know I’m from Indonesia. I want to share to you information about our media and the differences that we have compared to the media in America.

The significant difference between our media and America’s media is there is no freedom of the press. In Indonesia, journalists, producers, and all of the people working with the media have to pass the government’s filter before they can publish the news. In America everyone has a right to say anything to public because the first amendment that allows them to. It really surprised me the first time I saw “Saturday Night Live” make the presidential election into a comedy, making fun of each candidate. In the other hand, everyone has to watch what they are talking in the media in Indonesia because the government always keeps an eye on them.

First, I want to talk about the radio. Most radio stations in Indonesia are more concerned about their interactions with the listeners. They have different stations for different generations which mostly talk about their lifestyles, current events, and sports. Every time I went back home, I always listened to two of my favorite radio stations because they keep me up-to-date with current events, news, and music. Also, I can listen to the people participating and share their story on the radio.

Next, when it comes to news in television, they not only show the national news but also international news. In my opinion, they are doing a decent job in blending the international news, because we can always find out what happened in a different country. On the other hand, I have barely seen in America’s TV news talking about the international news. The only time I see it is if the news has a connection with the United States. Moreover, you never see people swearing and doing inappropriate things on television because everything has to pass the government’s filter.

Now, we are going to talk about my favorite part of the media, movies. We always play not only Indonesian movies but also American movies in the theater. All of the American movies that we play in the theater come with subtitles in Indonesian, so everyone can understand. Almost all Indonesian movies are about love, friendship, school, and horror. In my opinion, they can make a really good movie when it comes to horror.

Here is a preview of one of the horror movies that we have.

Finally, when it comes to music, we have different genres that are basically the same as American music. Our local bands often copy the styles and type of music from the international bands that they admired. However, there are few traditional genres that we have. For example: dangdut, keroncong, etc. People that like those types of music are more likely older people because they are very traditional and old.

Baby Boomers v. Generation Y

The first things that comes to people’s mind when they hear about “Generation Y” is Narcissistic, want a better pay, flexible work schedule, and expects an easy job.

All these characteristics about my generation might be true for some millennial, but they’re not for me. Growing up my parents taught me that to be a winner you have to pay the price and work harder than anybody else. That’s exactly what I do in school, college, and at work. Moreover, as an international student in the United States, I have to work twice as hard as anybody else to be a winner in school and work.

The baby boomers often focus on the negative parts of Generation Y and never talk about the positive parts of our generation that the baby boomers can’t keep up with, for example, our generation is always up-to-date with new technology and internet. Almost all of our generation are familiar with and can operate an I-phone, you can accomplish many things in that new “smart” phone. Most of the baby boomers either can’t operate an I-phone or don’t know there is a “smart” phone like that. I don’t have an I-Phone but if i were to change my phone, i would definitely choose an I-Phone. You can ask me how to operate an I-Phone and it’s going to take me a few minutes to learn and to show you everything that you can do with that phone.

When it comes to the dress code at work, I completely agree that we should feel comfortable with the outfit that we wear at work. We can wear button down shirts and khaki pants and still look professional and casual at the same time. The bottom line is that there is nothing to do with the outfit that we wear at work as long as we can perform our best at work. I really like how the Zappos Company has fun activities at their office that can make our generation enjoy and motivated to do our job. I really appreciate that some of the baby boomers can change their thinking and accept what our generation wants to do in the working environment.

During the last Christmas break, I worked at TBG, Incorporated for my internship. We did a lot of fun activities in the morning in order to get all the employees ready and motivated to do their job for the rest of the day. Almost all of my coworkers are Generation Y and our manager understands how our generation wants to be treated at work. TBG, Incorporated is one of the fastest growing sales and marketing firms in the Midwest.

The baby boomers should adapt and change their thinking to our generation, because if we feel comfortable with what we do, we can do better than their generation. I think they need to consider this phrase, “You have to take one step back before taking two steps forward.”
